PRESS RELEASE - HUMANISTS CONDEMN VIOLENCE IN TUNISIA

10 May 2011.

The Preparatory Committee for the establishment of the “Démocrates Libéraux” party, has expressed deep concern about the over-reaction of the Tunisian security forces towards the peaceful citizens, journalists and political activists who were present in the capital Tunis on Friday 6th May.

The International Humanist Party totally supports the declaration of the «Démocrates Libéraux» ( which will soon be recognized as the Humanist Party of Tunisia).

The International Humanist Party supports the stand taken by the Tunisian Humanists against the violent repression of the Police & Security forces to disperse the peaceful citizens and the press, among them children, young and adult people and women. It seems that the Police & Security forces are still under the influence of the brutal and repressive measures adopted by the security forces during the dictatorial regime that has been thrown-out by the people already with the ouster of Ben Ali.
The chase of peaceful demonstrators and protesters to disperse them and beat them violently was exaggerated in the back and parallel streets and confirms that the security forces did not change their behavior and their former brutal methods of handling of demonstrations, towards all the sections of the Tunisian society.

The International Humanist Party, supporting the Humanists in Tunisia, defend the Humanist Principles and Values, and we condemn the brutal and repressive measures adopted by the security forces in Tunisia as in-human and demand that such repression must be stopped immediately and permanently without any conditions whatsoever, releasing all the arrested people without any further delay and compensating those who have been killed, while providing adequate medical assistance to those hurt in this repression.

We also demand that the Interior minister of Tunisia should take full responsibility of these events and tender an unconditional formal-apology to the citizens, who have not committed any act of violence and were demonstrating in a peaceful manner, through the media. We confirm and stress again that we are a party that rejects all forms of direct and indirect violence and we call on all parties in Tunisia to respect the spirit of Dignity for all without any discrimination.

Copy to: Embassies of Tunisia in India, with a request to stop violence against common people.
